Mission

The Edward N. and Della L. Thome Memorial Foundation was established in 2002 by Robert P. Thome to honor the memory of his parents, Edward and Della Thome. The Thome Foundation is committed to providing for the dignified treatment of older adults and supporting medical research on diseases and disorders affecting them.

Guidelines

As discussed in its mission statement, the Thome Foundation funds in 2 primary areas. The proposal process and deadlines differ accordingly.

  • Dignified Treatment of Older Adults. The Thome Foundation supports organizations in Maryland and Michigan that provide direct services addressing 1 or more of the following critical issues facing older adults: health care, housing, family services, neighborhood involvement, workforce opportunities, and aging with dignity at home.

Grant requests for general operating support are strongly encouraged. Program support will also be considered. Program-related capital expenses may be included in general operating or program requests. To better support the capacity of nonprofit organizations, multi-year funding requests are encouraged. The Thome Foundation is most interested in expanding services for older adults. Requests should clearly state how many new (previously un-served) older adults will be served as a result of funding from the Thome Foundation.

There is a rolling deadline for organizations applying for a direct services grant from the Thome Foundation. Applicants will generally be notified of grant decisions within 6 months of proposal submission.

  • Medical Research on Diseases Affecting Older Adults. The Thome Foundation Medical Research Awards grant review process is administered by The Medical Foundation, a division of HRiA. Proposals will be considered from individuals who hold a faculty appointment at a nonprofit academic, medical, or research institution in the United States or US territories.

The research grant cycles rotate each year between age-related macular degeneration and Alzheimer's disease research. Generally research applications are due in September and decisions are made in December. Specific application deadlines are published on the HRiA website. A link is provided in the Application & procedures section of this page.
