Mission

The Sara Elizabeth O'Brien Trust was established in 1981 to support charitable organizations that provide treatment or care to those who are blind or have cancer. The O'Brien Trust also supports medical research in the areas of blindness or cancer.

Guidelines

The O’Brien Trust funds in 2 primary areas: Direct Service and Medical Research. The proposal process and deadlines differ accordingly.

1. Direct Service. The O’Brien Trust supports organizations in Massachusetts in the area of health and human services to provide treatment, care, training and/or rehabilitation to individuals living with blindness or who have cancer. Grant requests for general operating support are considered as well as program requests. Program-related capital expenses may be included in general operating or program requests.

The deadline to apply for direct service grants is May 1. Please use the Apply Now button in the Application & procedures section to submit an application. For questions regarding direct service requests, please call the bank contact. Applicants will be notified of grant decisions by the end of August.

2. Medical research. The O’Brien Trust’s grant review process for medical research is administered by The Medical Foundation, a division of Health Resources in Action (HRiA).

Cancer research grant applications to the O’Brien Trust are reviewed in conjunction with applications to the King Trust Postdoctoral Fellowships. The application deadline for cancer research is generally in February. Applicants will be notified of grant decisions by August. Two-year research fellowships, ranging from $87,000 to $106,000 are awarded.

Blindness research grant applications are reviewed in conjunction with applications to the Deborah Munroe Noonan Memorial Research Fund. The application deadline for blindness research is generally in March of each year. Applicants will be notified of grant decisions by June. One year grants of up to $80,000 are awarded.

Please visit the HRiA website for the published research application deadline dates, application guidelines and application forms. The HRiA website links are in the Application and procedures section of this page.
