What is an ABA routing number?

The ABA routing number is a 9-digit identification number assigned to financial institutions by The American Bankers Association (ABA). This number identifies the financial institution upon which a payment is drawn. Routing numbers are sometimes referred to as check routing numbers, ABA numbers or routing transit numbers (RTN). Routing numbers may differ depending on the state in which your account was opened and the type of transaction being made.

How do I know which ABA routing number to use?

The routing numbers you should use depends on the type of transaction you're conducting:

  • Electronic transactions: For example, to set up direct deposits (such as receiving paychecks or IRS refunds) or to send/receive payments to/from other financial institutions
  • Wire transfers: to receive domestic or international wire transfers
  • Paper transactions: For example, to order checks

You can find the correct routing number for the type of transaction you want to make by using our ABA routing number selector

What if my state has more than one ABA routing number?

There are more than one set of routing numbers for the following states: Florida, Illinois, Missouri and Texas. If you’re still not sure which routing number to use after using our ABA routing number selector, there are several ways to find the correct routing number for the type of transaction you want to make:
