Mission

The Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation was established in 1973. The Foundation's 3 primary focus areas reflect Mr. Balfour's strong affinity for the employees of the Balfour Company, his commitment to the city of Attleboro, Massachusetts, and his lifelong interest in education. Specifically, the Balfour Foundation supports:

  • Educational scholarships to employees of the Balfour Company, as well as to their children and grandchildren
  • Organizations serving the people of Attleboro, with special consideration given to those organizations that provide educational, human services and health care programming for underserved populations
  • Educational organizations that serve New England

Guidelines

Please read the following guidelines carefully, in addition to the Massachusetts procedures document (Balfour Foundation Appendix on page 12) located in the Application & procedures section of this page to ensure that your request is in line with the Foundation’s priorities.

As discussed in its Mission Statement, the Balfour Foundation funds in 3 primary areas. The proposal process and deadlines differ accordingly.

Scholarships. The Foundation provides scholarship support to employees of the Balfour Company, as well as to their children, grandchildren and other deserving Attleboro High School students. Balfour scholarships are administered through the Attleboro Scholarship Foundation. For further information, please contact Ms. Wendy Holt, Executive Director of the Attleboro Scholarship Foundation, at 508.226.4414.

Attleboro-Specific Charities. The application deadline for Attleboro-specific charities is March 1. The Foundation supports organizations that specifically serve the people of Attleboro, with special consideration given to organizations that provide educational, human services and health care programming for underserved populations.

Educational Organizations. The application deadlines for educational organizations are June 1 and November 1. The Foundation's educational funding is generally focused on organizations or programs that provide support for underserved or under-represented populations to prepare for, access and succeed in higher education, including 2-year and 4-year institutions. Please review the Massachusetts procedures located in the Application & procedures section of this page to ensure that your request is in line with the Foundation’s priorities noted in the Balfour Foundation Appendix on page 12.

Educational organizations may submit general operating support requests; however, we discourage general operating applications from organizations or programs with annual operating budgets of over $10 million. Further, we will not consider general operating requests from public schools, including public charter schools. Small program-related capital expenses may be included in general operating or program requests.

To better support the capacity of nonprofit organizations, multi-year funding requests are encouraged.

Organizations mentioned in Mr. Balfour's will, and therefore given special consideration when applying for a grant from the Foundation, include: Sigma Chi Foundation, the Inter-Fraternity Conference Foundation, Indiana University, Phi Delta Phi Foundation, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Culver Military Academy and the University of Notre Dame.
