Guidelines

The application deadline for the John D. & Katherine A. Johnston Foundation is July 1. Applicants will be notified of grant decisions before November 30.

The Johnston Foundation supports charitable organizations in Rhode Island that work to improve the lives of physically disabled low-income children and adults. Preference is given to charitable organizations that serve children in Newport, Rhode Island.

Mr. Johnston stated in his will: “…it is my desire that each child be given the opportunity of acquiring at least a good grammar school education as well as to receive, if desired, the instruction usually afforded by a business or commercial school, and when practicable, that such child be taught some trade or useful employment…” As such, educational, vocational, and job training programs will be a funding priority although healthcare, recreational programs, and access to religious services will be considered.

The majority of grants from the Johnston Foundation are 1 year in duration.
