Free Online Banking Service from Bank of America

Online Bill Pay: A primer

Whether you pay your bills online, over the phone or by check, any bill pay method is basically just a transfer of funds from the payer to the payee. When you use online Bill Pay, you get the same results, but you can skip the stamps and the trips to the post office.

Setting up and using Bill Pay

To take advantage of online Bill Pay, you'll need to sign up for Online Banking—if you haven't already done so. It takes just a couple of minutes and requires a few pieces of information you probably have on hand, like your Check Card or ATM card number, the last four digits of your Social Security number or Tax ID number, and your email address.

After you've selected your Online ID and Passcode and completed the enrollment process, sign in to the secure site and select the Bill Pay tab. To get started, all you need are copies of your bills from creditors you want to pay online. You'll only need to enter their details once. The next time you receive a bill (either electronically or in the mail), you can simply select the company or individual you wish to pay (from the list you input), then enter the payment amount, and click the Make Payments button at the bottom of the page. In a few business days—or at the date of your choosing—your payment will be made.

Additional online Bill Pay features

Beyond using Bill Pay to make payments manually (as described above), you can also set up automatic payments. If you have a recurring bill—and a linked checking or money market deposit account—you can choose to have your payments deducted automatically on a specific date each month. When the payment has been made, you'll receive notification of the activity.

Bill Pay also keeps up to six months of payment history, so if there's a discrepancy with a creditor or you aren't sure whether you've made a payment, you can pull up the information online and have the answer right at your fingertips.

To help protect your accounts, Bill Pay comes with a host of protections—like Bank of America's $0 Liability Guarantee. The guarantee states that you won't be liable for any unauthorized activity originating from Online Banking if you notify the bank within 60 days of the statement date on which the activity first appeared. In addition, Bank of America uses the award-winning SiteKey, which is a standard part of your Online Banking sign-in experience, and SSL (Secure Socket Layer) encryption to help protect your personal information.
