Two outstanding nonprofit/charitable organizations in 45 markets benefit from the Neighborhood Builders Program. Since its inception in 2004, Neighborhood Builders has helped 402 nonprofits across our franchise with operating support and rigorous leadership training.

Neighborhood Builders recipients:
- Are focused on local neighborhood priorities
- Receive $200,000 in general operating support (or local market currency equivalent) — $100,000 annually for 2 years
They also benefit from specially designed leadership development programs:
- Senior executives gather for two 4-day workshops. Topics include: strategic thinking; business planning; leadership development and succession planning; long-term business growth; and building a diverse funding base
- Emerging leaders gather for three 4-day workshops. Topics include: developing organizational management skills, managing strategic opportunities, forging alliances, and building communities
Apply to be a Neighborhood Builder
Applications for our Neighborhood Builders awards are accepted beginning January 1, 2009 through June 30, 2009 (8 p.m. Eastern Time).
To be considered for the Neighborhood Builders program, an applicant:
- Qualifying nonprofit organizations must have a tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service and are not classified as a private foundation
- Must be registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales for the London, UK market
- Must be based and serve communities in these Neighborhood Excellence Initiative markets:

The following categories are ineligible for funding:
- Organizations that deny service to a potential client or beneficiary on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, sexual orientation, age, national origin, ancestry, citizenship, veteran, or disability status
- Individuals, including those seeking scholarships or fellowship assistance
- Political, labor, fraternal organizations, or civic clubs
- Religious organizations (for example, churches and synagogues). Some secular community service programs such as soup kitchens, shelters for the homeless, and job banks are eligible, even when sponsored by religious groups.
- Individual pre-K-12 schools (public or private)
- Pre-Sixth Form/College (London, UK)
- Sports, athletic events, or athletic programs
- Travel-related events, including student trips or tours
- Development or production of books, films, videos, or television programs
- Memorial campaigns
- National health organizations (or their local affiliates) or research/disease advocacy groups
- Colleges and universities
