Each check contains account and routing numbers that are encoded with magnetic ink. The ATM reads the magnetic ink and then reads the amount by using Optical Character Recognition. Customers are asked to confirm the amount of every deposit. The ATM is not able to read checks printed on machines that do not use magnetic ink, such as home printers.
Bank of America obtains images of currency from the U.S. Treasury Department. Each bill is scanned using Optical Character Recognition and verified for their authenticity.
There is currently a project underway to make images of deposited checks available through Online Banking.
You may link up to 15 checking, savings, credit card or line of credit accounts to each Check Card or ATM Card. Please visit your local banking center or contact us to link and unlink your accounts. The linked account feature is not available for customers domiciled in Washington and Idaho.

Check deposits made on a business day by 8 pm will post on the same day. Exceptions apply. See your account agreement.
We do not accept foreign checks or foreign currency at the ATMs at this time. You may visit a banking center to exchange the foreign currency for U.S. Dollars, then make your deposit. For more information about depositing foreign checks, visit your local banking center.
You will need to deposit all of your funds into one of your accounts and then transfer the amounts to the other accounts.

The ATM saves you time by avoiding long teller lines.

The ATM is available for customer transactions 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Deposits made on or before the ATM cut-off time will get same-day credit.

Deposit Image ATMs offer additional advantages, including:

  • No envelopes or deposit slips are needed
  • Availability of funds: Cut-off times on all Deposit Image ATMs are extended to 8 pm Local Time, except as noted on the signage posted on the face of all Deposit Image ATMs, and immediate availability is provided for cash deposits

You may not deposit coins at the ATM. Please take coin deposits into a local banking center.
Yes, select the option to receive no receipt at Deposit Image ATMs,
The ATM reads the images of the bills and compares them to images provided by the U.S. Treasury Department. If a bill is worn, folded or has extraneous marks on it, its image will not match the images provided by the U.S. Treasure Department and it will be rejected.
The most common reason is that the account and routing number has not been encoded with magnetic ink. The ATM is not able to read checks printed on machines that do not use magnetic ink, such as home printers.
We recommend endorsing all checks. If the name on the check matches the name on the account, we will try to process the deposit without an endorsement on the check.
Deposit Image ATMs accept one check at a time. Multi-Check ATMs accept up to 10 checks at a time. The total number of checks accepted at an ATM is unlimited.
At our new Deposit Image ATMs, you can insert 40 bills at one time. If you have more than 40 bills, select Add More Cash and continue making deposits until you complete your transaction.
You may deposit up to $9,999,999.99 per transaction.

Making transfers and withdrawals at the ATM

A maximum of 40 bills can be dispensed at one time from the ATM. There may also be limits based on account type and availability of funds. All 3 factors are considered when determining how much cash can be withdrawn from an ATM.
You may increase or decrease the limit that you can withdraw at an ATM a variety of ways:

Note: This functionality is not available in Washington and Idaho

Fast Cash enables you to designate an amount that you consistently withdraw in advance of your transaction. Once you enter your PIN and select Fast Cash you will receive the amount previously designated. This saves you time if you frequently withdraw the same amount.

Withdrawal allows you to enter the specific amount of funds you choose to remove from your account.

You may set or change your Fast Cash preferences at the ATM after entering your PIN. From the Select Transactions screen, select Other Options, then Set Fast Cash Preferences and designate the amount you want to assign to Fast Cash.
Accounts must be linked to your Check Card or ATM Card in order to make transfers between accounts at the ATM. Select Transfer Funds from the Transaction screen and follow the screen prompts.

Making bill payments at the ATM

This feature is no longer available at the ATM, but you still have several options for making payments to your mortgage:
You can make payments to your credit card at the ATM if your credit card is linked to your Check Card or ATM Card. After you enter your PIN, select the transfer funds option and follow the prompts. Please visit your local banking center or contact us to link and unlink your accounts to your Check Card or ATM Card.

Funds Availability

Banks are governed by federal regulations surrounding the availability of funds, and Bank of America makes every effort possible to make funds available as quickly as possible to our customers. The Bank of America's policy looks at different criteria, such as type of deposit, deposit amount and customer relationship.
The following types of deposited funds receive same day availability, including interstate deposits:
  • Cash
  • ACH
  • Wires

Cut-off times apply for covering items during nightly processing.

The following types of deposited funds must be made available on the first business day following the banking day of deposit :
  • Cashier's checks
  • Certified checks
  • Federal Reserve Bank checks
  • Federal Home Loan Bank checks
  • Official checks
  • On-us checks (checks drawn on Bank of America)
  • State or local government checks (if deposited in issuing state)
  • Teller checks
  • Travelers cheques
  • Up to $100 of aggregate deposit of local and non-local checks not already subject to next day availability
  • U.S. Postal Service money orders
  • U.S. Treasury checks

Note: Private money orders such as those available at convenience stores and other non-bank outlets are subject to the same holds as checks or drafts.

When certain checks (Federal Reserve Bank or Federal Home Loan Bank checks, state or local government checks, or cashier's, certified, official or teller's checks) are deposited at a proprietary (Bank of America owned) ATM, the funds must be made available by the second business day following the banking day of the deposit.

Using your Check Card or ATM Card in international countries

Yes, today ATMs are available worldwide. The two largest networks are the Master Card/Cirrus and Visa/Plus networks which have over 530,000 ATMs worldwide in over 100 countries. Two important considerations when using foreign ATMs:

1. Some foreign ATMs are only available during normal business hours

2. Many foreign ATMs offer instruction in English, but not all of them

Most foreign ATMs will only give you access to your primary account.
You may increase or decrease the limit that you can withdraw at an ATM a variety of ways:
Cash in foreign countries is dispensed in the local currency and debited from your account in dollars.
If you are unable to use a foreign ATM, you may be able to use your Check Card or ATM Card to withdraw funds at a local bank.
Check Cards may give you a better exchange rate than you'll receive at currency exchange bureaus.
Bank of America is member of the ATM Global Alliance. The ATM Global Alliance is a group of financial institutions that has created the world's first international ATM Alliance.

Use your Check Card or ATM Card within the Global ATM Alliance in the countries shown with no International ATM fee, however, International Transaction Fees may apply. Some members may have locations in countries other than the country listed in the coverage area. Only ATMs in the country listed are considered part of the Alliance.

Withdrawals, deposits, transfers, payments and balance inquiries made at ATMs in foreign countries outside of the ATM Global Alliance will be charged a $5.00 fee.

In addition, an International Transaction Fee will be charged for ATM Card and Check Card transactions made for foreign purchases or ATM cash withdrawals in currency other than U.S. Dollars, regardless of whether or not the transaction occurred at an ATM in a country covered in the ATM Global Alliance. The International Transaction Fee will be 3% of the U.S. Dollar amount for each converted purchase or 1% of the U.S. Dollar amount for each converted ATM cash withdrawal. This International Transaction Fee will appear as a separate item on your banking statement for each international transaction.

Bank of America provides exchange rates for foreign currency online.
Foreign currency travelers cheques provide you with security. They are backed by American Express®, and if are lost or stolen, they can usually be refunded within 24 hours. By buying them in advance you can save money by locking the exchange rate before you embark on your trip.
Many travelers find it necessary to have local currency immediately upon arrival for tips, taxis, and other miscellaneous expenditures. It's a good idea to have some cash in foreign currency on hand for immediate expenses. Some airports and train stations do not have foreign exchange offices and if they do, they may have limited hours of operation and may charge high rates for the exchange.
Bank of America customers can order foreign currency and purchase foreign travelers cheques online or by phone.
If you have a Bank of America account, you may sell foreign currency online, up to $3000.00 U.S. Dollar equivalent. For amounts over $3000 U.S. Dollar equivalent, please visit a banking center.
Unused foreign currency travelers cheques can be exchanged at a banking center.
The U.S. State Department provides country specific information including travel warnings, restrictions and public announcements issued by the U.S. government to its citizens.
ATMs can be used to get foreign currency while traveling and can save you money when compared to buying currency at exchange rate booths. Despite the advantages, you need to be prepared for special circumstances that can arise when using an international ATM. Below are a few tips to get you squared away:
  • Check the network: Check to see what network your card is in. Cards in the Cirrus and Maestro networks often feature ATMs with easy-to-read instructions in English. Bank of America belongs to the ATM Global Alliance.
  • Research the country: There are some countries where ATM transactions are blocked. Please research the country to verify whether you will be able to use your Check Card or ATM Card.
  • Understand the types of fees charged: Fees may be incurred for using the ATM and there is also a currency conversion fee. It is usually better to use larger transactions than multiple smaller ones.
  • Know your PIN: Many countries only allow four-digit PINs. You may need to get a new PIN if your current PIN is longer. Also, make sure that your PIN has no letters. If you have letters in your PIN, call your bank and ask them translate the letters into numbers.
  • Withdraw during business hours: Some international ATMs only operate during business hours. Don't get stranded without cash over a weekend. Secondly, some banks only update transactions during normal business hours. This means if you withdraw the maximum per day amount on Friday, you won't be able to withdraw cash again until the bank updates their records on Monday.
  • Have a backup plan: Have an alternative means of making purchases, such as using foreign currency, travelers cheques or a credit card.

Security & Fraud Prevention for Check Cards and ATM Cards

The Photo Security feature provides added security by offering customers the option of having their photo placed permanently on the front of their Bank of America Check Card and/or credit card.
  • Photo Security is available to consumer customers with Gold, Platinum and Platinum Priority Check Cards, as well as Classic, Gold and Platinum Credit Cards (Visa and MasterCard)
  • Photo Security Check Cards are available for any checking account customer, including non-resident or resident aliens without a SSN or TIN

Photo Security is not available on standard Check Card or ATM Cards. Standard Check Card or ATM Cards require the use of a Personal Identification Number or PIN. So, photo identification is not needed or required.

There are a variety of options for requesting an Photo Security card:
The ATM reads the images of the bills and compares them to images provided by the U.S. Treasury Department. If a bill is worn, folded or has extraneous marks on it, its image will not match the images provided by the U.S. Treasure Department and it will be rejected. Fraudulent bills are also rejected.
  • Treat your card like cash and keep it in a safe place
  • Keep your personal identification number, or PIN, a secret.
  • Do not disclose card information over the phone to anyone. No one needs to know your PIN, not even your financial institution.
  • Never disclose information about your card in response to an unsolicited email or request.
  • Make certain your Internet shopping sites are secure.
  • Protect your card's magnetic stripe. Do not expose your card's magnetic stripe to magnetic objects.
  • Report a lost or stolen card immediately.
  • Carefully review your account statements.
  • Always pay close attention to the ATM and your surroundings. Make sure you do automated banking in a public, well-lit location.
  • Maintain an awareness of your surroundings throughout the entire transaction.
  • Be wary of people trying to help you with ATM transactions. Bank representatives will have identification.
  • Be aware of anyone sitting in a parked car nearby.
  • Pay attention when leaving an ATM to make sure you are not being followed. If you are, drive immediately to a police or fire station, or to a crowded, well-lit location or business.
  • Do not use an ATM that appears unusual looking or offers unfamiliar options.
  • Do not allow people to look over your shoulder as you enter your PIN. Memorize your PIN; never write it on the back of your card.
  • Do not re-enter your PIN if the ATM eats your card. Contact a bank official.
  • Do not wear expensive jewelry or take other valuables to the ATM.
  • Never count cash at the machine or in public. Wait until you are in the safety of your car or another secure place.
  • When using a drive-up ATM, keep your engine running, your doors locked and leave enough room to maneuver between your car and the one ahead of you in the drive-up line.
  • Deposit Image ATMs reduce the paperwork required prior to your arrival at the ATM. This will minimize the amount of time spent at the machine.
  • Make sure you retain your transaction receipt. Do not throw the receipt away at the ATM site.
  • Closely monitor your bank statements, as well as your balances, and immediately report any problems to your bank.
  • If you are involved in a confrontation and the attacker is armed and demands your money or valuables, give it to them. Do not resist. Your property may be recovered later or replaced.

ATM Fees

Bank of America customers can withdraw cash with their Bank of America Check Card or ATM Card without a fee at nearly 18,000 Bank of America ATMs in the United States and at over 12,000 international ATMs operated by members of the Global ATM Alliance.

Withdrawals, deposits, transfers, payments and balance inquiries from ATMs at other financial institutions will be assessed a $2.00 fee. You may also be charged a fee by the ATM operator or any network used. You may be charged a fee for a balance inquiry even if you do not complete a funds transfer. Other account fees may apply to the transaction such as an Excess Withdrawal fee for savings

Problems using an ATM

If the ATM keeps your card, it is pulled into the ATM after 20 seconds and kept in a secure location. Check Cards or ATM Cards that are left in ATM machines are removed and destroyed so a replacement card must be ordered. There are a variety of options for requesting a replacement card:
If the ATM is located at a banking center, please notify a banking center associate during regular business hours. Please report any discrepancies in your account by contacting customer service.
