Houston recently surpassed Los Angeles and New York as the most ethnically diverse metropolitan area in the nation. It's also the Energy Capital of the World and home to the largest medical center in the world, a combination that offers a unique opportunity to create a pipeline for jobs in our low-income communities. Bank of America is doing our part in multiple ways, including working with historically black colleges to create programs that help students complete the education and training necessary to compete and succeed in today's workforce. We continue to fund summer youth programs, connecting 16-to-24-year-olds with jobs to earn money and work in fields of interest. We also support numerous nonprofits that help individuals and families in Houston plan for greater economic mobility through access to food, shelter and other fundamental needs. We're a resilient and close community here, leaning on one another through challenging times, not so long ago from Hurricane Harvey and now through the health crisis. The spirit of volunteerism is alive here, and we're putting our resources to work, helping our nonprofits in every way possible.
An historic Houston neighborhood on the rebound
The once-thriving Fifth Ward is reversing decades of decline. Real estate development plays a key role in that, as well as programs that celebrate the Fifth Ward’s heritage and build community pride. For example, Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation (CRC) works to build and preserve an inclusive community by developing places and opportunities for people to live, work and play. Our support for Fifth Ward CRC is an example of our commitment to help advance racial equality and economic opportunity in local neighborhoods around the country.

At Bank of America, we’re committed to addressing the root causes of inequality through a company-wide commitment to advancing racial equality and economic opportunity across diverse communities. We are doing this by building upon our existing efforts and leveraging our strengths: creating more affordable housing and expanding home ownership, increasing lending and support to minority-owned small businesses, championing job training and career readiness and addressing health disparities like access to care. We also know we can’t solve these challenges alone, so we’re partnering with other corporations, local nonprofits and community leaders across the country who share our vision for creating meaningful change.
